The Situation

Initially, the version of Methamphetamine that is on the street today does not even closely resemble the version that was on the streets in the 70s and 80s here on the East Coast of the US. Today's version is manufactured using mostly household substances and is infinitly more poisonous and addictive than previous versions. Previous versions were used by some of Adolf Hitler's troops and arguably by his athlete's in the 1932 Olympics. Other versions were issued to some Japanese Kamikaze pilots in WWII. Today's version originated with biker gangs in CA State Prisons in the late 70s and allows for the extremely dangerous manufacturing of Meth by the average user... making illicit Meth labs a toxic and persistent threat to our communities.

Moreover, average users/maufacturers in today's world often just "throw out" used toxic soups of Meth chemicals into the ground in their own back yards, releasing these compounds into our environment.

Most frighteningly, figures vary... but as a rule of thumb here in the East, over half of Meth lab busts involve the presence of children. So, these dangers that the users/manufactures subject themselves to is not isolated to themselves. Meth endangers everyone and everything in close proximity to it and its users.

The Legal Environment

As many state and local governments in the East react to the spread of Meth by creating laws that make it difficult to acquire enough of certain supplies (psuedoephydrine mainly) to "cook" Meth, the general public conception is that Meth lab busts are going down in number. 'Not true. Supply laws have proven historically that they produce an immediate slow down, but not a permanent one, as Meth manufacturers find other supply chains. For example, TN has a supply law and it is widely suspected by law enforcement in this state that would be manufacturers are simply driving to Michigan to acquire their supplies, then coming back to TN to manufacture their Meth.

Supply laws are good. They help. But we need better tooling to help law enforcement and society as a whole, make Meth reductions permanent!
